In our last lesson, The Bible’s Purpose: God’s Plan for Humanity, we looked at how the Bible reveals God’s incredible plan for us. This week, we are going to explore God’s Law: A Covenant With His People.

Understanding God’s law as a covenant is really important to our Christian faith. His Law shows us His nature, what He expects from His people and the way to experience His blessings. But this covenant isn’t just a set of rules; it is a loving agreement that calls for obedience.

In the Old Testament, the Israelites were chosen to be God’s special people, set apart from the rest of the world through their commitment to is Law. This relationship wasn’t just for them-it was meant to show the world who God is. The same principles still apply to us today, as God’s Word continues to guide us under the New Covenant through Jesus Christ.

LESSON OUTLINE

  1. THE COVENANT NATURE OF GOD’S LAW
  2. THE BLESSINGS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LAW

LESSON EXPOSITION

THE COVENANT NATURE OF GOD’S LAW (Exo. 19:5; Lev. 11:44)

Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant…
(Exo. 19:5)

a) Exo. 19:5: God’s Law isn’t just a set of rules; it is a divine guide reflecting God’s will for His people, calling them to listen to His voice and keep His covenant.

b) The Law is a gift showing God’s “People how to live in a way that honours Him. It isn’t just rules about survival but understanding and following God’s desires(cf. Matt 5:17).

c) v. 6: God calls His people to be a “kingdom of priests” and a “holy nation”, if they obey Him. The Law is a relationship. It isn’t just about rules, but about building a deeper relationship with God.

d) God’s Law is an invitation to live closely with Him, reflecting His holiness and purpose We are also called to be a holy,
chosen people (1 Pet. 2:9). Does that describe you?

e) Lev. 11:44: God’s Law reflects His holinessand calls us to live pure lives (cf. 1 Pet. 1:15,16). It is about inner change, not
just rules, and through Jesus alone, we can live by His standards.

THE BLESSINGS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LAW (Deut.28:1-2,15; Jer.31:33-34)

If you will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God… all these blessings shall come upon you.
(Deut. 28:1-2)

a) Deut. 28:1-2: God promises blessings-peace, prosperity and protection- to those who obey Him. Obedience brings His favour Seek God’s kingdom first and everything else follows (Matt. 6:33).

b) v. 15: Obedience comes with the responsibility to live by God’s commands. Disobedience brings penalties, including separation from His blessings. Our choices matter (cf. Gal. 6:7)

c) Jer. 31:33: God is always faithful to His people, His covenant is built on His faithfulness, not our perfection (2 Tim. 2:13). Even when we fall short, He remains committed to us. The New Covenant in Jesus offers restoration and hope for
reconciliation.

d) vv. 33,34: God’s promise to be our God is rooted in His unchanging faithfulness. While nothing separates us from His love (Rom.8:38-39), our relationship with Him requires continued faith and obedience. His faithfulness is not an excuse for disobedience.

LESSONS DERIVED

  1. Obedience unlocks God’s blessings. Following His commannds invites His favour and rewards.
  2. God’s covenant is a relationship, not a contract. It is a call to trust, obey and commit to His love.
