INTRODUCTION

TEXTUAL SOURCES: Isaiah 61:1; Matthew 4:4,7,10; 7:28,29;22:23-32; Mark 12:24; Luke 24:25-27; John 1: 1-3, 14:14:16

We thank and praise God for last week’s lesson, where we explored His laws as a guide for His people and saw the importance of the covenant between God and His people.

As we continue our journey through the Scripture, we come to a special moment in our study of God’s Word. This lesson invites us to look closely at the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, focusing on how He honoured and used the Scripture. This week, we’ll see how Jesus’ example provides a powerful model for our own relationship with God’s Word. As we reflect on these passages, let’s ask ourselves: How do we embrace and apply God’s Word in our daily lives? Do we, like Jesus, treasure the Scripture as the infallible source of guidance, comfort and strength?

May we be inspired by Jesus’ example this week, and may our hearts burn with a deeper love and passion for God’s Word.
Amen.

LESSON OUTLINE

  1. HE KNOWS THE SCRIPTURE WELL
  2. HE TEACHES THE SCRIPTURE WELL

LESSON EXPOSITION

HE KNOWS THE SCRIPTURE WELL (Isa. 61:1; Matt. 22:23-32; Mk. 12:24; Lk. 24:25-27;]n. 1: 1-3, 14; 14:16)

Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?”
(Mk. 12:24)

a) Matt. 22:23-32: It takes one who truly understands something to recognise its mistakes. Jesus shows He knows the Scripture fully. Here, Jesus rebukes the Sadducees for getting it wrong.

b) Jn. 1:1ff; 14:6: As the Word and Truth, Jesus’ understanding of the Scripture is beyond anyone else’s.

c) Isa. 61:1: His unmatchable deep understanding of the Scripture came directly from God’s Spirit, Who made the
Scripture truly inspired (cf. Lk. 4:18).

d) Lk. 24:25-27: To further show His unequalled knowledge of the Scripture, Jesus rebuked some of His disciples for being slow ofheart to believe in scriptural teachings.

e) v.27: Later, He explained to them from all the Scripture how they pointed to Him, showing His deep understanding of
God’s Word.

HE TEACHES THE SCRIPTURE WELL (Matt. 4:4,7,10; 7:28,29)

And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching.
(Matt. 7:28)

a) 4:4,7,10: Jesus’ affirmation of the Scripture is evident in how He quoted liberally from it during His temptation. The Word of God is the only sure guarantee of victory over sin and Satan.

b) He could use the Scripture to defeat Satan because He had a deep understanding of it. Not only did He know it well, but also taught it with great wisdom.

c) 7:28,29: Jesus’ deep knowledge of the Scripture gave Him the authority and skill to teach with power He taught from the Scripture, as He came to fulilit(2 Tim. 3:16).

d) v. 29: .. for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. The Scripture’s divine authority gave Jesus the power and effectiveness in His teaching, something the Scribes lacked.

LESSONS DERIVED

  2. Jesus teaches us to trust God’s plan, even in uncertain times, and tosee that rejection can serve His purpose, giving us
    comfort and direction.

QUESTIONS

  1. What is the significance of knowing the Scripture and applying it in our daily lives, in the light of Mark 12:24?
  2. How did Jesus’ use of the Scripture to demonstrate His understanding of God’s sovereign plan?
