We thank our Heavenly Father Who graciously enlightened us last week on the Formation of the Bible Canon, which is lesson 14 in this study series. May we be ever willing to live by the truth of the Bible, in Jesus’ name.Amen.

The Bible is more than a book; it is God’s inspired Word, given to guide humanity in faith, morality and the understanding of His divine plan. It has been written over centuries, preserved through countless challenges and embraced by people from all walks of life. Yet, it remains one of the most scrutinised and debated texts in human history.

How can we trust its words? How has it survived so many attempts to discredit, or destroy it? These are questions that every believer should explore, not only to strengthen our own faith but also to provide answers to those who seek the truth.

This week’slesson examines: The Reliability and Endurance of the Bible, an exploration of its historical credibility and unchanging relevance. Together, we will discover why the Bible remains a steadfast guide for life and a testimony to God’s
unchanging truth and power. Happy learning.

LESSON OUTLINE

  1. THE RELIABILITY OF THE BIBLE
  2. THE ENDURANCE OF THE BIBLE

LESSON EXPOSITION

THE RELIABILITY OF THE BIBLE (2 Kgs. 7:6; Isa. 46:9-10; Matt. 5:18)

…My counsel shall stand…
(Is.46:10)

a) 2 Kgs. 7:6: Archaeology consistently supports the Bible’s historical accuracy. It confirms its people, places and events,
e.g., the Hitite civilisation (cf. Gen. 15:20).

b) In the 19th century, discoveries provided strong evidence of the Hittite empire, proving the Bible’s accuracy (cf.Ps.119:89).

c) The Bible is one of the best-preserved ancient texts, with thousands of manuscripts, including the Dead Sea Scrolls (1947-1956) and over 5,800 Greek NT manuscripts, confirming its reliability.

d) Is. 46:9-10: The Bible’s prophecies were fulfilled with remarkable accuracy, proving divine foresight, e.g. the Messiah’s birth (Mic. 5:2) and crucifixion (Ps. 22:16-18)
were foretold centuries before they happened.

e) Matt. 5:18: The Scripture was carefully copied to ensure accuracy. Jewish scribes followed strict rules, counting every letter. The NT was widely shared, with only minor variations that don’t change key teachings.

THE ENDURANCE OF THE BIBLE (lsa. 40:8; Matt. 5:18, 24:35)

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.
(Matt. 24:35)

a) Matt. 5:18: Despite persecution and attempts to destroy it, the Bible remains the best-preserved, most translated and
most widely distributed book in history;

b) It is available in over 3,600 languages, and has sold an estimated 5 billion copies, making it the best-selling book of all time, while its teachings continue to shape laws, ethics and cultures globally.

c) Isa. 40:8; Matt. 24:35: The Bible declares its own permanence and unchanging nature, unaffected by the
passing of time, or human limitations.

d) Throughout history, rulers and regimes have sought to destroy the Bible. In 303 AD, the Roman Emperor, Diocletian
ordered the destruction of all Christian scriptures, yet the Bible survived and Christianity flourished.

e) William Tyndale’s English translation of the Bible in the 16th Century was banned and he was executed for his efforts. Yet,
his work laid the foundation for subsequent English translations, including the KJV.

f) The rise of higher criticism in the 18th and 19th centuries questioned the Bible’s authorship and authenticity, but archaeological discoveries and further research have vindicated it.

g) The Bible’s ability to transform lives across cultures and generations proves its relevance. Personal testimonies, such
as those of missionaries and former sceptics, reveal the Bible’s ability to lead individuals to faith and purpose (cf. Heb.4:12).

h) John Wycliffe (14th Century) said: “The Bible is the government of the people, by the people, and for the people” He emphasised the Bible’s enduring authority and relevance to human governance and morality.

LESSONS DERIVED

  1. The Bible’s reliability confirms it as the ultimate authority for the Christian faith and life.
  2. The Bible’s endurance demonstrates God’s power and commitment to preserving His Word.

QUESTIONS

  1. Why is the Bible considered reliable?
  2. What evidence demonstrates the Bible’s endurance?
