INTRODUCTION

TEXTUAL SOURCES: GENESIS 6:1ff; 7:1ff; 8:20-22; 9:1ff

We thank God for the way He has chosen to
communicate His will to us, especilly as today marks ‘World Telecommunication Day.’

Last week, through His Word, our understanding of CREATION AND THE FALL OF MAN has grown even deeper Glory be to the Lord. Hallelujah!

Understanding God’s Covenant With Noah is the
seventeenth lesson. In this lesson, we will explore the idea of covenants in the Bible. God has made many covenants throughout Scripture, but 5 stand out: The Noahic, Abrahamic,
Mosaic, Davidic and Messianic (New) Covenant. A covenant is not just a promise; it is a deep, sacred agreement between God and His people, where both sides make commitments and take
responsibilities.

Today, we will focus specifically on God’s covenant with Noah. Gaining an understanding of these covenants is essential-it is truly the key to unlocking the meaning of the Bible. May we
embrace God’s wisdom through His Word and allow it guide our lives, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

LESSON OUTLINE

  1. UNIVERSAL FLOOD BEFORE THE COVENANT
  2. UNCONDITIONAL UNIVERSAL COVENANT

LESSON EXPOSITION

UNIVERSAL FLOOD BEFORE THE COVENANT (6:1-22; 7:1ff)

So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them”
(6:7).

a) 6:1-12: Because of the Fall, man’s wickedness became increasingly great to the extent that God became sorry for making man. Yet, God found Noah a righteous man, who wasn’t influenced by the evil practices of his days.

b) vv. 12.99. God’s judgement on man was imminent, but He delayed it to give Noah time to prepare an escape for those willing to trust in His preservation (2 Pet. 2:5).

c) 7:1ff: God sent a flood to destroy the godless, sparing only Noah, his family, and the animals in the Ark, implying His judgement on sin and preservation of the righteous (Gen.18:23-26; 2 Pet. 2:9-10)

d) This world is sailing towards the brink of God’s judgement because of its wickedness, and God is ready to wipe it out to usher in the New Heaven and Earth (2 Pet. 3.3-7). Repent now and be watchful!

e) Noah’s obedience and faithfulness are commendable, as covenant demands complete compliance (Exod. 19:5). Had he disobeyed, it could have been too disastrous (cf. Isa. 1:19-
20).

UNCONDITIONAL UNIVERSAL COVENANT (6:18; 8:20-22;9:1-17).

Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a
flood to destroy the earth. (9:11).

a) 6:18; 9:11: After the flood, Noah sacrificed unto the LORD with gratitude to Him who saved him and His family from the deluge. Learn to appreciate God for His covenant and faithfulness.

b) The Noahic covenant unfolds in phases:

  1. Before the flood: But I will establish My covenant with you..you shall go into the ark (6:18).
  2. After the flood: The LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said… (8:20-22).
  3. Still after the flood: Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him saying… This is the covenant with a sign (9:8-17).

c) God made a covenant with Noah and future generations promising never to send another flood as punishment (v.11). Despite the passing years, God’s promise remains, showing His faithfulness and mercy.

d) All of God’s covenants in the Bible include promises that are fulfilled in Christ- the new covenant (er. 31:31-34; 2 Cor.1:20).

LESSONS DERIVED

QUESTIONS

  1. Can people take comfort in the Noahic covenant, where God promised never to flood the earth again, and live as they please?
