We thank the Lord for the wisdom we’ve gained in UNIT 1: THE NATURE, MESSAGE AND INSPIRATION OF THE BIBLE, We trust that the first 8 lessons have taught us valuable truths. Now, as we move into Lesson 9: God’s Word In Creation And Law, we begin Unit Il: Preservation And Dissemination Of God’s Word.
In the last lesson, we saw that the Bible speaks to everyone, no matter their age, gender, or background. This week, well learn how God has always wanted to reveal Himself to humanity. He does this in many ways, including through the story of creation in Genesis and the giving of the Law to His people.
May this lesson deepen our understanding and bless us as we study, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
LESSON OUTLINE
- REVELATION THROUGH NATURE
- REVELATION THROUGH GOD’S LAW
LESSON EXPOSITION
REVELATION THROUGH ATURE (Gen. 1:14-18; Ps 19:1-14;104:19-23)
The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
(Ps. 19:1)
a) Ps. 19:1: Besides dreams, visions, trances, etc, God has chosen to reveal Himself to Man through Nature (vv. 1-6), His Laws (vv. 7-11) as well as daily experiences (vv. 12-14).
b) A careful observation of the universe shows that the heavens are telling the glory of God; they are a marvelous display of his craftsmanship(TLB).
c) wv. 2-3: Day and night they keep on telling about God (TLB). Without uttering a word, the messages God intends to pass,
reach to all and sundry, believers and unbelievers alike (cf. 97:6).
d) Gen. 1:14-18: There is none of these creatures that were created without a purpose. God made two great lights, the sun and the moon- the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars (vv. 16-17NLT; cf. Matt. 2:1,7-9).
e) Ps. 104:19-23: Without any special announcement, the moon keeps tracks of the seasons, the sun is in charge of each
day (v. 19 TM). Besides, the sun knows the exact time of its settings (AMP) and the place of its setting (NASB). What a great messagefrom inanimate beings!
f) vv. 20-22: Darkness is not left aside the revelation of God’s Word to mankind. When it is dark and night takes over, all the
forest creatures come out (TM). And this elapses when the sun rises (v.22).
REVELATION THROUGH GOD’S LAW (Gen. 2:15-17; Exo. 20:1f; 24:12; Hab.2:2)
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them”.
(Exo.24:12)
a) A law is a written set of rules for living. After leaving slavery, the Israelites, under God’s rule, needed laws to uide their behaviours worship and daily living.
b) Gen. 2:15-17: God never leaves His people without clear guidance, boundaries, or commandments and He never gives someone a task without also giving instructions (cf. 1Sam.13:1-14).
c) I will give you tablets of stone…which I have written: tablets of stone contain the laws and commandments written by God
Himself (cf.Exo. 31:18; 32:15-16).
d) Exo. 20:1f: The 10 Commandments (the Decalogue) (Exo. 20:1ff) were written on stone tablets for durability and stored in the Ark of the Covenant (cf. Exo. 25:10-22; 1 Kgs 8:9). They focus on loving God (first four) and others (last six).
e) The purpose of the Law and the commandments is very clear: that Moses may teach them. A written law needs a
teaching priest for effective understanding (cf. 2 Chr. 15:3).
